I was surprised to find that doing publicity is the part of being a writer (hope I'm not being presumptuous to call myself that) that I enjoy the most. It's a real "high" to be on camera or in front of a microphone, almost as if you're in an altered reality.
The most important principle about getting publicity is this: The media couldn't care less that you wrote and published a book. It may be big news to your family and friends, but not to anyone else. But the media are always hungry for stories and messages, especially if they tie into current news. So an author seeking publicity should be asking, "How can I give you an interview that will attract an audience to your show (or magazine or newspaper)? The question is never, "Can I talk about my book?"
